Teacher Directions:
This problem can be used to evaluate a student's understanding of equivalent fractions.
Give the student four pieces of paper of the same size. Tell the student to:
  1. Fold one piece to show halves and color one half of every piece.
  2. Now fold one piece of paper again to show a fraction that is equivalent to one half and has four as the denominator.
  3. Fold another piece to show a fraction that is equivalent to one half and has six as the denominator.
  4. Fold the last piece to show a fraction that is equivalent to one half and has eight as the denominator.
  5. Ask the student to identify each equivalent fraction (1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8).
As the student works through each part of the problem make notations about their understanding of the concepts.
