Objective:
Using a calculator to solve consumer problems.

Materials Required:
Calculator, journal, food circulars

Description of the Activity
Student direction: You are on a limited budget, you have x amount this week to spend on groceries. You need to plan what you will purchase to feed your family of four for one week. You must include breakfast, lunch and dinner. You are eating out only one night, pizza, this too must come from your gro- cery budget. Include also all snacks. Cleaning supplies and paper products are not to be calculated, only edible food products. Working with a partner:
  1. Plan menu in journal.
  2. Make shopping list.
  3. Using the food circulars calculate your list (list price next to item).
Teacher direction: Decide on the dollar amount of the food budget.
