Topic:
Self-Assessment of Math Concepts and Skill Development
Grade Level:
4-6
Strategies:
Journals, Self-Assessment
Objectives Being Assessed and/or Purposes for the Assessment:
To have students self-assess their progress in mathematic skills at regular
intervals.
Description of the Activity:
When all instruction for a unit has taken place and several days of reviewing and reteaching will take place before formal testing, students will answer questions by writing a journal entry for self-assessment. This will allow students to verbalize their own perceptions of their performances and gain greater insight in an effort to establish reasonable goals. Questions will include:
- What did you learn in mathematics during this unit?
- Did any of the work cause you problems?
- What part of this unit is still not clear?
- What questions do you have?
A copy of these questions can be stapled to the inside cover of each student's math journal for reference at the end of each unit, or posted in the classroom. This information can be used to determine which skills need to be reviewed or retaught, as well as to determine which students may need individual assistance and/or remediation before formal testing.
Management Tips:
Before beginning journal entries, review with the class the specific skills and/or concepts instructed in the current unit of instruction. List these at the board for students' reference.
