Topic: Stem-and-Leaf, Median, Mean and Range Using Cooperative Learning

Grade Level Category: 7-12

Strategies: Observation and Checklist

Objectives Being Assessed and/or Purposes for the Assessment:
Be able to construct a stem-and-leaf plot, and compute mean, median, and range. Figure out which measure of central tendency is a better measurement for close data or data with extreme values. Observe the students working in groups and mark any actions that are seen on the checklist form.

Materials Required: Description of the Activity:
Have the students break into groups of four or less. Each student has their own sheet to write on, but have them turn in one sheet per group. All the students are suppose to do all of the questions and discuss anything that they do not understand.

Management Tips:
I graded the group work on a rubric which, depending on their score, would raise their end of the nine-weeks percentage. This seemed to motivate them to do the activity and stay on task.
