Objective Being Assessed:
The objective being assessed is the ability of the student
to estimate real-world problems as they go on a
make-believe shopping trip.
Materials Required:
"Why Estimate?" worksheet
calculators (For self-evaluation)
Description of the Activity:
The teacher will introduce the class to the concept of
how important estimating is in the wonderful
world of shopping. Students will individually
work on their estimations, making sure they write
out if their estimation makes sense to them and
any other thought processes occuring. They can
check their own estimates using a calculator.

Scoring Rubric:
Each student worksheet will be assessed with the following rubric:
- 2. Full understanding of assignment and/or objectives. Assignment is complete
and correct.

1. Attempts assignment, but does not follow through to completion or attempt
does not show understanding.

Management Tips:
Students should be familiar with mental math activities and
the use of a calculator.
