Topic:
Math Autobiography
Grade Level Category:
7-12
Strategy:
Journals
Objective(s) Being Assessed and/or Purposes for the Assessment:
To see what "attitude" students have toward mathematics.
Materials Required:
Pencil and paper
Description of the Activity:
On the first day of school I gave my students an assignment to write their math autobiography. They were to include their feelings about mathematics and how they felt about being enrolled in their math class. Students were to turn this in the following day.
Reproducible Page
A similar page can be found in the Dale Seymour Publication called Write Starts by Margaret E. McIntosh and Roni Jo Draper on p. 17.
Extension(s):
At the end of the year I plan on returning the students' math autobiographies to them and asking them to reflect on the course they just took in order to see if their attitude toward mathematics has changed at all.
Management Tips:
If you decide to use this idea, you may want to assign this to different classes on different days. It does take awhile to read through all of the autobiographies.
