TOPIC: Relationships between graphs and numbers.
Grade Level Category: 4-6
Strategy: The strategy will be an interview with individual students to discover
their understanding of the revelance between a graph and numbers.
Objective/Purpose:
The learner will be able to make a relationship between a
graph and numbers. The relationship will be whether they
they can put the given numbers into the pies of the graph.
Students will hold an interview with the teacher to tell how
they arrived at the answers.
Materials Required: "See What You Think 2" worksheet.
Manipulative of pie graphs to get a concept of the actual
sections of the graph.
Description of the Activity:
Teacher will give each student a set of pie graph
manipulative to get the concept of a graph in the
pie form. The students will discuss the sizes of each
section of the pie. They will estimate the number that
they feel would fit each section. The student will then
be given a worksheet with pictures of pie graphs and
percentages of numbers to place within each section.
The students will then attempt to answer the questions.
The teacher will interview each student based upon
a series of questions about why they chose the answers
they did.

Management Tips:
Students may not be familiar with the concept of graphs in the
pie shape. The manipulative should help students grasp the
concept. Students may not have concept of percentages. Give
examples of situations where percentages could be used.
