TOPIC: Number Sense

GRADE LEVEL CATEGORY: 4-6

STRATEGY: The strategy will be writing in a journal to discover whether they can tell why they chose to put certain numbers in particular places.

OBJECTIVE BEING ASSESSED and/or PURPOSES FOR THE ASSESSMENT:
The learner will be using number sense to decide where numbers should go in a given story. They will become familiar with numbers making sense in a story form.

MATERIALS REQUIRED: DESCRIPTION of the ACTIVITY:
Teacher will give each student an explanation of why we must use numbers in a "make sense" situation. Each group will be given the worksheet to read and decide where numbers fit into the story. They are to use trial and error and process of elimination to arrive at the most reasonable answer. After deciding among the group, they are to write in the number answers.

SCORING RUBRIC:
Students will be scored by a group style rubric. MANAGEMENT TIPS:
Problems that may arise could be students who do not work well in groups. Practice of grouping may need to be reviewed first. Students may have a problem under- standing the number concepts given at the bottom of the worksheet. Give examples of how numbers similar to those in other situations, like the situation on the worksheet.
