Topic: Geometry Journal Entry

Grade Level Category: 4 - 6

Strategy: Journal

Objective Being Assessed and/or Purposes for Assessment:
To assess understanding of lines, line segments, rays, and angles.

Description of Activity:
Present the following situation to the students.

Leo the Line, Rachel the Ray, Susan the Segment and Archie the Angle are having an argument about who is the best. Write what each character is giving as reasons it is the best. Give specific reasons relating to the attributes of the geometric term. Stating that one is the best is not good enough. Name calling is not acceptable.

Students record the argument in their journals and are scored on a rubric.

Scoring Rubric:
0 Not understanding
- uses name calling
- does not mention specific attributes
1Developing
- does not mention attributes for all figures
- confuses attributes
- may not respond to all the questions
2Understanding/Applying
- gives correct attributes for each figure
- provides a good argument
- responds to all the questions

Management Tips: Explain the rubric when presenting the activity so students understand all the requirements.
