Objective:
Student will be able to explain equivalent fractions.

Materials Required:
fraction bars
fraction circles
paper and pencil

Description of the Activity:
Ask the students to write an answer to this question:
Can two equivalent fractions with different denominators have the same numerators?
They then must explain their answers. They may use the fraction bars or circles as they work if they need.

Scoring Rubric:
4 Answered correctly
Showed understanding by explaining with examples which show knowledge of multiplication by the number one as a fraction.
3 Answered correctly
Showed some understanding by trying to use examples.
2 Answered correctly
Showed little attempt to explain or unclear in the explanation.
1 Answered incorrectly or correctly
Showed no attempt to explain.
