Dr. Alden Craddock
Ukraine Project Director
In 1999, the partnership with the Al-Ukrainian Association of Teachers of
History, Civic Education and Social Studies "Nova Doba" began.
This effort has included the sharing between U.S. and Polish educators
of pedagogical
techniques and training methods in civic education. The program focus
has been on developing Project Citizen activities, curriculum development
for
teaching democracy in Ukraine and integrating civic education with other
content areas. | |

The partnership has greatly evolved since its
conception in 1999. The partnership began between the Mershon Center as part
of the Transatlantic Civic Education Program. That project was a collaborative
effort that assisted NOVA DOBA in developing civic education curriculum and
teacher training programs.
Since then, the project has moved from the Ohio
State University to Bowling Green State University (B.G.S.U.) and included
the Alabama Center for Civic Education as important partner. The focus of
the exchange activities continues to be curriculum development, teacher
training but has added the goals of promoting Project Citizen and developing
guides for integrating civic education in other content areas.
The 2004-05 exchange will focus on the conduct of a major research project
on student learning ifor democracy, development of an online teacher education
course for US and Ukrainian teachers, and conduct of Project
Citizen
activities
in both countries.
