Dr. John Fischer
Poland Project Director
In 1995, at the request of the Polish Ministry of Education, the partnership
began working to bring a better understanding of democracy to Poland.
This effort has included the sharing between U.S. and Polish educators of
pedagogical
techniques and training methods in civic education. The program focus has
been to promote systematic implementation of civic education reform in Poland. | |

The partnership has greatly evolved since its
conception in 1995. The partnership began between the Mershon Center at The
Ohio State University, Division of Youth, Families, and Community Service,
Administrative Office of the Courts in Kentucky, and the Center for Citizenship
Education in Warsaw. Since then, the project has moved from the Ohio State
University to Bowling Green State University (B.G.S.U.). The focus of the
exchange activities continues to be promoting systematic implementation of
civic education, and democratic school reform in Poland and Ohio. Work has
also begun on developing an on-line teacher in-service course for teachers
in Ohio and Poland.
The 2004-05 exchange will focus on the conduct of an online teacher education
course for US and Polish teachers, conduct of Project Citizen activities
in both countries and preparation for a major research project on student
learning for democracy.
