The procedure for international student application is very
similar to the application process for U.S. prospective students,
but involves sending your items to the Center for International
Programs. Please visit the site at http://go2.bgsu.edu/choose/info/international/ for more information about international application procedures.
Admission Criteria
The admission decision is based on multiple pieces of information
including, but not limited to, the following:
| 1. Career Goals |
• The "fit" between the
student's career goals and the program's mission;
• Evidence that the applicant's interests and
needs can reasonably be satisfied by the University's
existing resources;
• The student's personal and professional goals,
i.e., what the person wishes to achieve in higher education;
• The applicant's research interests in higher
education |
| 2. Academic Preparation and Ability |
• Results of the Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) Aptitude Test;
• The ability to formulate ideas and write coherently;
• Evidence that the applicant's aptitude, attitude,
and motivation are adequate for successful completion
of the doctoral program;
• Scholastic ability as reflected by the grade
point average in undergraduate and graduate coursework
to date
• Results of the TOEFL examination score or Michigan
Test (international students only) |
| 3. References |
• References from three individuals who are
familiar with the applicant and his or her abilities |
| 4. Background Experience |

higher education, with a preference for at least 3-5

Admission Procedures
After you have submitted all required credentials, the HIED
Admissions Committee will review them and determine whether
to invite the applicant for a personal interview. The general
purpose of the interview is to provide specific information
for the applicant's use in determining whether there is a
good "fit" between the program's emphases and his
or her personal and professional needs. Additionally, the
interview serves to provide further information about the
applicant to the Admissions Committee in order to make the
final admission decision. For students wishing to enroll on a full-time basis, they will also interview for available assistantships. Please see our assistantship page for more information. Note: If traveling to Bowling Green, Ohio is a problem, other arrangements
might be made. If an admission interview is offered to you,
please ask us about the possibility of videoconferencing or videotaped
admission interviews. However, an on-site interview is preferrred
by the Admission Committee if it is reasonable to make the
trip.
The 2008 HIED Interview Weekend is scheduled for February 22-23, 2008. In addition to the admission interviews, the Weekend
will include assistantship interviews, opportunities to meet
the faculty, university and community information, an apartment
tour, and plenty of time to meet current students as well
as other prospective students.
The Admissions Committee is composed of faculty and student
representatives. Its function is to review the applicant's
credentials, conduct interviews, and make recommendations
to the program faculty regarding the admission decision. A
recommendation to the Graduate College on admission or denial
will be made by the Director with the approval of the program
faculty.
Application Deadlines
Applications should be submitted by Jan. 15 of the year you
would like to be admitted to ensure consideration for fall
admission and HIED Interview Weekend. Applications received
after that date will be considered on a rolling basis. Once
all required materials are received, the admission decision
will be made as soon as practicable. If the applicant does
not enroll during the semester for which admission has been
granted, he or she must do so within two years or reapply
to the program. While admission may be deferred, assistantship
offers are made on an annual basis and cannot be held for
a particular student.
Transfer Credit
Since the Ph.D. requires 63 hours of study at BGSU beyond
any master's degree credits previously earned at another institution,
those credits cannot be credited toward the Ph.D. However,
students who have already earned credit for courses required
in the Ph.D. program may, in consultation with their advisor
and with the permission of the HESA Chair, substitute those
courses for required Ph.D. courses. Where students substitute
courses they must still earn a total of 63 hours of post-master's
credit at BGSU in courses approved by the Chair.
