Selection of the Program Advisor
As soon after admission into the program as the student feels
comfortable (but no later than the end of the first semester
of coursework), the student should select a program advisor
from among the members of the HIED program faculty. This selection
is typically made on the basis of compatibility, mutual respect,
and common research interests. Students should take the initiative
to get to know each faculty member, especially those faculty
members whom the student does not have for a class, in order
to guide this selection. The student should approach the faculty
member and obtain his or her explicit consent to be a program
advisor (a confirming memo for the student's file is sufficient).
The relationship between the student and his or her program
advisor is an in-depth relationship on academic matters from
which the student should expect to obtain continuing guidance.
Program Requirements
The course of study is normally expected to include a minimum
of 63 hours of coursework beyond the master's degree. The
exact number of hours will be determined by the student's
program advisor based on a review of previous graduate transcripts,
the student's professional and personal aspirations, and the
Ph.D. degree requirements of the Graduate College and the
HIED program. Therefore, some Tentative Degree Program (TDP)
plans will include only 63 hours, while others may include
additional hours at the discretion of the program advisor.
Independent Study and Internship
Only three semester hours of independent study coursework
and three semester hours of administrative internship can
be applied toward the 63-hour program. Additional hours of
independent study or internship may be taken with approval
to meet the twelve hour registration requirement for graduate
fellowships.
Course of Study
The minimum 63 semester hours required for the degree will
be divided as follows:
Core Courses - 15 hours
Cognate - 12 hours
Research Methodology - 12 hours
Electives - 6 hours
Dissertation Seminar - 2 hours
Dissertation Research - 16 hours
(plus the Global Understanding requirement and GradStep)
Students who have
already earned credit for courses required in the Ph.D. program
may, in consultation with their advisor and with the permission
of the Chair of HESA, substitute those courses for required
Ph.D. courses. However, students are still required to earn
63 hours minimum at BGSU.
