We are very pleased that you have decided to apply to our
program. This page is designed to help you understand the
application process and to compile your application materials
for submission. For a printer-friendly application and information
packet, please click on the HIED
2008-09 Information and Application materials. Make sure to also print out reference forms. In addition, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page for common concerns and issues that prospective doctoral students often ask about the program.
General Information About Admission
Admission
is selective and restricted to the number of doctoral students
to whom the program faculty believe they can provide quality
instruction, advising, and dissertation direction. Cohort
size is considered, although the number of full-time and part-time
students applying will affect the determination of a cohort
size in a given year. The application and admissions process
includes the submission of application materials (some to
the Graduate College, some to the HIED program - see below.)
If an application is reviewed favorably, the applicant is
invited to interview with the Admission Committee. For students wishing to enroll on a full-time basis, they will also interview for available assistantships. Please see our assistantship page for more information. Based on
interview and all other information, the Admission Committee
then makes a recommendation (for admission or denial) to the
Graduate College.
Admission Criteria
The
admission decision is based on multiple pieces of information
including, but not limited to, the following:
| 1. Career Goals |
• The "fit" between the
student's career goals and the program's mission;
• Evidence that the applicant's interests and
needs can reasonably be satisfied by the University's
existing resources;
• The student's personal and professional goals,
i.e., what the person wishes to achieve in higher education;
• The applicant's research interests in higher
education |
| 2. Academic Preparation and
Ability |
• Results of the Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) Aptitude Test;
• The ability to formulate ideas and write coherently;
• Evidence that the applicant's aptitude, attitude,
and motivation are adequate for successful completion
of the doctoral program;
• Scholastic ability as reflected by the grade
point average in undergraduate and graduate coursework
to date
• Results of the TOEFL examination score or Michigan
Test (international students only) |
| 3. References |
• References from three individuals who are
familiar with the applicant and his or her abilities |
| 4. Background Experience |
• Successful work experience in the field of
higher education, with a preference for at least 3-5
years post-master's professional work experience. |
| 5. Personal Interview |
|

Admission Procedures
After you have submitted all required credentials, the HIED
Admissions Committee will review them and determine whether
to invite the applicant for a personal interview. The general
purpose of the interview is to provide specific information
for the applicant's use in determining whether there is a
good "fit" between the program's emphases and his
or her personal and professional needs. Additionally, the
interview serves to provide further information about the
applicant to the Admissions Committee in order to make the
final admission decision. (Note: International students and
other students who are unable to travel to BGSU may arrange
for a videoconference or videotaped interview. However, the
"real-live" interview is preferred by the Admission
Committee.)
The 2008 HIED Interview Weekend is scheduled for February 22-23, 2008. In addition to the admission interviews, the Weekend
will include assistantship interviews, opportunities to meet
the faculty, university and community information, an apartment
tour, and plenty of time to meet current students as well
as other prospective students.
The Admissions Committee is composed of faculty and student
representatives. Its function is to review the applicant's
credentials, conduct interviews, and make recommendations
to the program faculty regarding the admission decision. A
recommendation to the Graduate College on admission or denial
will be made by the Director with the approval of the program
faculty.
Application Deadlines
Applications should be submitted by Jan. 15 of the year you
would like to be admitted to ensure consideration for fall
admission and HIED Interview Weekend. Applications received
after that date will be considered on a rolling basis. Once
all required materials are received, the admission decision
will be made as soon as practicable. If the applicant does
not enroll during the semester for which admission has been
granted, he or she must do so within two years or reapply
to the program. While admission may be deferred, assistantship
offers are made on an annual basis and cannot be held for
a particular student.
Transfer Credit
Since the Ph.D. requires 63 hours of study at BGSU beyond
any master's degree credits previously earned at another institution,
those credits can not be credited toward the Ph.D. However,
students who have already earned credit for courses required
in the Ph.D. program may, in consultation with their advisor
and with the permission of the HESA Chair, substitute those
courses for required Ph.D. courses. Where students substitute
courses they must still earn a total of 63 hours of post-master's
credit at BGSU in courses approved by the Chair.
