CSP Internships
Internships (Assistantships)
The terms "internship" and "assistantship" are often used interchangeably. Generally, the term "assistantship" is used when
referring to the work experience as a way to financially support a student. For example, the BGSU Graduate College will refer
to assistantships when generating contracts and discussing financial aid. The term "internship" is often used to mean the
work experience as an educational experience, where a student learns "hands on" about an area of student affairs. For example,
the CSP curriculum includes a required internship. Because most students use their internships to support themselves while
a full-time student, either term might be appropriate ("So, where do you work for your internship/assistantship?"). HESA frequently
uses internship in program documentation.
Internships All students enrolled in the Master's Program in College Student Personnel are required to complete a two-year internship
concurrent with graduate coursework. Internships are sponsored by Bowling Green State University as well as thirteen area
two-year and four-year institutions, called Cooperating Colleges. Since most internships are two years in duration, specific
internships that will be available for prospective students during any year will vary. Internship positions, conditions, responsibilities
and remuneration are subject to change without notice.
Generally, the internship office pays the graduate intern's salary and the CSP program arranges for a tuition scholarship
covering instructional fees. Students are responsible for their own general fees that come to around $62 per credit hour.
For on-campus interns, this general fee will have been automatically deducted from your stipend. Students who choose to
take summer courses are expected to pay their own general fees that summer (about $250.) To maximize the variety of internships,
cooperating colleges from a wide region participate in the BGSU CSP program. For those student who must travel from Cooperating
Colleges to BGSU classes, course offerings are arranged so that only 1-2 trips per week to BGSU are required (usually one,
with some weeks requiring an additional trip.)
Types of Internships The number and types of internships vary each year. However, every year a wide variety of internships are available in numerous
functional areas such as residence life, career services, orientation, greek affairs, leadership development, student activities,
alumni affairs, and more. A list of common internships is located below. In addition, internships are available on campus
at BGSU and at several cooperating colleges that work closely with the CSP program. This unique features allows our students
to experience different functional areas in a variety of collegiate settings.
