Curriculum

The following courses comprise the required academic core of the Master's Degree Program. In combination with the required experiential core (which includes your assistantship) and appropriate electives, they constitute a curriculum of 45 semester hours. Required Courses (30 credit hours*, see below)
CSP 601: Foundations and Functions of College Student Personnel (3) History, philosophy, and goals of student affairs units in colleges and universities. Emphasis on practitioner roles and responsibilities.
CSP 602: Theory and Assessment of College Student Development (3) Examination of theories describing patterns of growth and development during the college years. Implications for the design of educational practice on the college campus.
CSP 603: Theory and Assessment of Educational Environments (3) Application of environmental theory to the assessment of human environments. Special emphasis on the study of select campus environments and their influence on students.
CSP 604: Educational Outcomes of American Colleges and Universities (3) Examination of the impact of post-secondary educational institutions on students; exploration of barriers to student development and role of student affairs in reducing these barriers and increasing the beneficial impact.
CSP 605: Capstone Seminar in College Student Personnel (3) This seminar is designed to promote the integration of the core curriculum and practitioner experiences of the master's degree program in College Student Personnel and to prepare students for their transition to professional positions within student affairs upon graduation.
CSP 689: Supervised/Advanced Supervised Field Experience in College Student Personnel (3, 3, 3) Students must be engaged in supervised field experience in appropriate areas of College Student Personnel. Participation in regularly scheduled seminars dealing with analysis of issues in higher education is required.

The next two courses serve as basic tools of inquiry for the master's program. Students are advised to complete both courses as early as possible during the program, especially those planning to complete a thesis. Individuals with a sufficient undergraduate preparation in statistics may consider testing out of EDFI 641 (consult with your adviser).

EDFI 641: Statistics in Education (3) Statistics as tools in education and research, descriptive statistics, transformation of scores, sampling and probability, linear correlation and regression, introduction to statistical inference and basic tests of significance.
EDFI 642: Research in Education (3) Identification and evaluation of research problems, research designs, use of library resources, data gathering and writing research reports.

CSP 697: Practicum in College
Student Personnel (1-4)

Many students in the CSP program choose an additional academic experience known as a practicum. A practicum experience typically lasts one semester and students receive 1-4 semester credits. A practicum experience is an excellent opportunity for students to gain training in another facet of student affairs and broaden skills or understanding of other campuses or offices. Courses may also be taken at other campuses in consultation with an adviser (up to nine semester hour credits may be transferred in to BGSU from the other colleges or universities). Graduate extension courses are offered at the Firelands Campus. Firelands Campus is a branch campus of Bowling Green State University located in Huron, Ohio.

Each student must design and submit a 45-hour plan of study (Tentative Degree Program - "TDP") to the Graduate College after completing 12 hours of coursework. Of the 45 credit hours, at least 30 credits must be from academic courses; up to 15 hours of experiential learning credits may be applied toward graduation. Nine (9) of the possible 15 hours of experiential learning credits will be awarded in conjuction with the student's internship through CSP 689.
