Descriptions of Rotations
Clinical Experience

Designed to provide an in-depth experience to reinforce skills including nutrition assessment, care plan development, counseling skills and understanding and using the medical record. Students will focus on specific areas including endocrinology, cardiology, nutrition support, surgery, oncology, critical care, obstetrics and pediatrics and rehabilitation. Participation as part of the health care team is emphasized. Students will gain experience at regional health care facilities and sub-acute and extended care facilities. Students have had the opportunity to observe procedures such as PEG tube placement and gastric by-pass surgery for weight reduction.

Administrative Experience
Designed to provide experience in the operation of a health care facility and school food service. Skills emphasized include menu planning, sanitation, human resource management, quantity food purchasing and production. Students will also develop an understanding of the standards of the Joint Commission . Administrative experiences are also included in several of the community rotations.

Community Nutrition and Ambulatory Care Experience
Designed to allow students to explore the dietitian's role beyond the hospital setting in the area of community nutrition services. Outpatient settings may include a family practice center or specialty areas such as diabetes or cystic fibrosis. Students will also work with the Women, Infants and Children program and will explore the role of the registered dietitian as a nutrition educator in a county health department or public education agency. Rotations may also include a corporate wellness or university wellness program setting.

Program Personalization
Every effort is made to tailor the Dietetic Internship rotations to meet individual student's needs and interests within the guidelines set by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. New sites are continually added in response to individual student's requests. The Program utilizes the expertise of other disciplines within the Bowling Green State University community such as exercise physiology, and health promotion.
