http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/edhd/eflp/macie/

2. I am a returned Peace Corps Volunteer and wish to apply to the MACIE program as a Peace Corps Fellow.  What is the first step?

Returned Peace Corps Volunteers wishing to apply to the Peace Corps Fellows program must first apply to the MACIE academic program and be accepted into the program, just as all applicants. In order to be considered for the “Fellows” program, returned Peace Corps Volunteers must also apply for a Graduate Assistantship (as all other students) and indicate on the form that they are a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer.  They must also submit a copy of their “Description of Service,” showing that they completed their service in good standing. This should be obtained by the Peace Corps office in Washington.  See their website:  http://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=learn.whyvol.eduben.fellows

3.  What is the purpose of the MACIE program?

The purpose of this degree is to prepare professional educators to be effective leaders in the internationalization of schools and communities and to be positive facilitators of cross-cultural understanding. The focus of this degree program is to prepare a global educator who is able to:

• infuse education policy and practices with cross-cultural awareness
• serve as a leader in internationalizing curriculum
• foster international educational partnerships.

4.   What can I do with a master’s degree in cross-cultural and international education?

Since the MACIE program welcomes applicants from a variety of academic backgrounds, experiences, and expertise, there are endless opportunities available for those who seek to increase their marketability by earning a degree in cross-cultural and international education.  Our current MACIE students have expressed an interest in working in international development, with international organizations and non-profits, school policy reform, international and study abroad education, transitional schools for prospective international students, and acting as school administrators and teachers. The inter-disciplinary nature of the MACIE degree allows for our students to pursue any of these options, plus many more.

5.  What skills would I gain from the MACIE program?

The required core courses serve to enhance research, analytical, and writing skills, in addition to the skills developed in the student’s chosen cognate. The combined skills serve as a foundation of knowledge required to succeed in a multicultural and global environment.  With the increasing amount of diversity both in and outside the United States, having the skills to successfully serve diverse populations requires the cultural sensitivity and awareness that the MACIE program seeks to instill.

6.  When should I apply?

Please apply by February 15th (or the Monday following this date if the 15th falls on a weekend) in order to be given full consideration for a graduate assistantship and other possible scholarship possibilities for fall admissions. Students wishing to attend part-time may apply until April for the following fall. Only occasionally do we accept applications to begin the program in January.  If so, those applications are due by November 15th.

In the event that a student has a particular professional interest in an area that logically combines nine hours of courses in the College of Arts and Sciences or other colleges across campus for another international thematic strand, that student, under the guidance and approval of the advisor, may create his/her own cognate. Cognate courses must take the student out of the area of “education” in order to develop outside skills which may then be applicable in an educational setting.

20.      Can you get TESL certification upon completion of the second language acquisition cognate?

Currently, there is no system in place to award TESL certification upon completion of the second language acquisition cognate.  However, a TESL certificate is presently being designed and may be available by fall 2010.
