The opportunity for East Toledo teachers to participate in DiscoverCTL is funded by BGSU's
Partners in Context and Community project. This project, and both DiscoverCTL
and its adaptation for use in pre-service teacher education, were supported
by projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

v    What is DiscoverCTL?

DiscoverCTL is an online professional development program. It is designed to teach educators how to use contextual teaching and learning in their classes to help improve their students’ achievement.

DiscoverCTL is unique and innovative. Selected educators can learn from home via the Internet in the Fall, Spring or Summer. The program helps teachers improve their teaching.

Both students and teachers benefit from this program. Students are benefiting from receiving an education from a more effective teacher, while teachers are furthering their effectiveness.

In addition, this program:

  • Allows professionals to participate at virtually anytime and any location with internet access
  • Provides participants with (3) graduate semester credits!

v    How does DiscoverCTL work?

The DiscoverCTL program consists of approximately 5 to 7 East Toledo teachers organized into virtual learning communities.

The “classroom” is an interactive online system. Teachers collaborate and gain knowledge about contextual teaching and learning techniques to utilize in their classrooms. This interactive online program provides useful instruction from the convenience of your own home!

v    Summer Institute 2005
  • Attend Summer Institute for two weeks:

    Monday-Thursday, June 13-16, 2005 and 

    Monday-Thursday, June 20-23, 2005

  • 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
  • Based at the Toledo Federation of Teachers on Byrne Road, BGSU, East Toledo, and other locations in the greater Toledo area.
  • Topics will focus on Contextual Teaching and Learning;
  • Particular attention will be paid to diversity and community resources in the East Toledo area

Benefits

  • Participates receive 3 semester hours graduate credit.
  • Professional Development in Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). CTL utilizes teaching strategies such as service learning, problem-based learning, and work-based learning to create meaningful learning experiences for students.
  • Increased understanding and knowledge of community resources and the diverse nature of the East Toledo community.
