The opportunity for East Toledo teachers to participate in DiscoverCTL is funded by BGSU's
Partners in Context and Community project. This project, and both DiscoverCTL
and its adaptation for use in pre-service teacher education, were supported
by projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Faculty Comments:

"I would love to use this system to guide and help me with each class I teach. The program or process of CTL helped me to refine my classroom pedagogy... hopefully for the better learning of my students."

-Deb Alvarez, Faculty
English Department, BGSU

v    What is DiscoverCTL?

DiscoverCTL is an online professional development program. It is designed to teach educators how to use contextual teaching and learning in their classes to help improve their students’ achievement.

DiscoverCTL is unique and innovative. Selected educators can learn from home via the Internet in the Fall, Spring or Summer. The program helps teachers improve their teaching.

v    Who Benefits from DiscoverCTL?

Through DiscoverCTL, everyone benefits.

The first group that benefits are the students. When faculty engage in DiscoverCTL, they are becoming more effective and learning valuable techniques for bringing context to their students. Students find more meaning in what they are learning. They become more motivated and learn at a higher level.

Obviously those participating in the program benefit. Faculty learn CTL while working in a learning community of colleagues. They can do this on their own time — at home or in their office or wherever they have Internet access.

Finally, the faculty at BGSU benefit from engaging in the faculty development of other educators. And, DiscoverCTL takes only a semester !

v    How can I help others learn about DiscoverCTL?

The DiscoverCTL program consists of Bowling Green State University faculty organized into virtual communities of approximately five to seven individuals.

The “classroom” is an interactive online system. Faculty collaborate and gain knowledge about contextual teaching and learning techniques for use in their classes. The program supplies educators with valuable information . Not only is the program useful, it is convenient!!
