The pro-seminar is designed [1] to develop the writing, critical, and analytical skills necessary for graduate study and [2] to develop pedagogical skills necessary to become an effective teacher. This semester the focal text for the development of objective [1] will be Kant’s Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics. We will engage in a close critical reading of the text and some relevant secondary literature. Students will be expected to write critical essays, give presentations, and review and critique each other’s work. The focus of objective [2] will be on the development of classroom techniques and practices. We will address issues of content and methodology with a focus on the practical problems involved in organizing a course, setting goals, constructing syllabi, designing assignments, developing resources and using and mixing various in-class teaching techniques.
