James Bailey
Jim Bailey graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1967 with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. He received
a master of science degree in mathematics from New York University in 1970.
He began his career at Bell Telephone Laboratories and joined Booz Allen Hamilton consulting firm in 1970. He then joined
Citicorp in 1972 and advanced through several assignments including analysis and planning, operations, finance and sales.
He was named director of credit management in the Bankcard division in 1978, and moved to the New York retail banking division
as regional business manager in 1984. He returned to lead the Bankcard division in 1985 and was named group executive for
all card products in 1989, helping grow Citibank's credit card business from one million cards in 1977 to over 20 million
cards in 1990.
From 1992 to 1994, Bailey was executive vice president responsible for Citibank's North American consumer bank, which included
the branches, mortgage and credit card businesses. He spent three years as executive vice president of global transaction
services, managing the cash management, trade and securities services businesses in 100 countries worldwide. His last assignment
from 1997 to 2000 was implementing a worldwide Six Sigma quality program.
He retired as executive vice president of Citibank in 2000 and until 2003 consulted in the areas of strategy, organization
planning, consumer marketing, financial modeling, Six Sigma quality, and consumer credit and risk management. He led a team
to review and recommend a restructuring of the Bank of China as it prepared for China to enter the World Trade Organization.
From 2003 to 2007 Bailey served as chief operating officer of U.S. Trust and a member of the executive committee of Schwab.
He was responsible for product management, operations and technology, private banking, marketing and the institutional business
at U.S. Trust.
He was a member of the U.S. and International board of directors of VISA and a board member of the Depository Trust Corporation.
Currently, he is on the board of directors of the Student Loan Corporation, the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and the
Bowling Green State University Foundation Board.
He and his wife, Judy, have two daughters and reside in New Canaan, Conn., and Naples , Fla. His interests include baseball,
college football, golf, travel and American history.
