PURPOSE The College of Arts and Sciences is an intellectual community that nurtures student learning, fosters faculty research and
creative activity, and provides service to the larger community.
MISSION STATEMENT The College of Arts and Sciences brings together disciplines in the arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social
sciences to form the intellectual heart of Bowling Green State University. It is the mission of the College to foster liberal
education, to encourage the generation of knowledge, and to contribute to the good of the community. The College promotes
lifelong learning, research, creative activity, social and professional responsibility and growth. To these ends, the College
challenges students to think critically and intuitively, to cross disciplinary boundaries, to recognize and value diverse
perspectives, and to solve problems creatively and with perseverance.
VISION STATEMENT The College of Arts and Sciences is dedicated to national distinction as an intellectual community that fosters personal commitment
to lifelong learning, to intellectual, creative and personal growth, and to enduring values of a liberal education. To that
end, the College is helping undergraduate and graduate students achieve their potential intellectually, culturally and personally
and to become global citzens.
VALUES The College of Arts and Sciences values:
- Excellence in teaching, research and creative activity, service and support activities
- Creating and disseminating new knowledge and creative expression
- Preparing individuals for leadership, professions, citizenship, and lifelong learning
- Promoting critical thinking and clear communication; scientific, mathematical and technological literacy; sensitivity to literature,

GOALS FOR 2005 By 2005, the College of Arts and Sciences will:
- Establish endowed professorships in the principal divisions of the College
- Increase private support for programmatic and curriculum enrichment
- Expand research facilities for the sciences and seek improved facilites across the College
- Construct new performance and classroom facilities for the Theatre Department
- Be the first choice of scholar/teachers who place personal value on developing every student’s full potential intellectually,
culturally, and personally
- Occupy a unique position of leadership in selected areas of research and creative production nationally
- Expand our global focus by increasing international study and research opportunities for our students and faculty
- Increase the number of merit-based scholarships and dollars available for the entire College by 20%
- Establish continued, adequate funding to support equipment-intensive programs in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities
STRATEGIC GOALS AND FUTURE DIRECTIONS In order to enhance its national distinction, the College of Arts and Sciences will:
- Achieve national distinction and international prominence in selected areas of the natural sciences, social sciences, arts
and humanities.
- Recruit, support and retain a diverse faculty that is committed to liberal learning, innovative pedagogies, significant research,
creative endeavors, and service.
- Promote and support alternative approaches to instruction, including new teaching and learning technologies, multidisciplinary
and experimental learning, and increased opportunities for international education.
- Increase sponsored research and creative output.
- Attract highly qualified undergraduate and graduate in order to enhance the learning community.
- Foster leadership, character development, civic engagement, and critical thinking about ethical issues among students and
faculty.
- Increase our understanding and appreciation of other cultures by expanding our global focus.
- Work in partnership with our regional community through a variety of outreach activities that will enhance the education of
our students and forge strong positive relationships with external contingencies.
- Foster alumni and friends of the College to promote and generate external support and validation of our programs.
