Dr. Brett Holden is the advisor for VAST, the Veterans Assessment and Service Team. This organization has been in the Chapman
Learning Community for four years. In this group, students are able to volunteer service hours to companies in the First Battalion
and the 148th Infantry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard, work with Sew Much Comfort to make clothing for soldiers, work with students in a Vietnam Literature course, write holiday cards and letters to soldiers,
and do many other activities.

Dr. Holden says the mission of VAST is to “educate students and community members about war, the effects of war, and the veteran
experience in general,” and the people involved in VAST are able to do this through the activities done in the group. He says
that through this RESC 200 course, he hopes for students to “gain knowledge of how to shape positive social change once they
graduate, learn how to work on behalf of others, and put their college education to good use.”
