Cynthia Mahaffey , Ph.D.— ENG 111R: Varieties of Writing and ENG 112R: Research Writing, Women’s Studies 200V,American Cultures Studies 250 and occasional independent studies on topics as diverse as middle school social studies teaching, entrepreneurship, master’s thesis writing, sexual harassment, and the history of women’s newspaper advice columns.

Dr. Mahaffey holds a B.A. in English from California State University, Fullerton; an M.Ed. from Nazareth College of Kalamazoo in Secondary Education with a focus on teaching writing strategies for students with learning challenges, and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing from Bowling Green State University. Her research interests include sexual orientation as it affects teachers and students in the composition classroom; fostering diversity awareness; Writing Across the Disciplines; teaching research writing, teaching writing strategies for college students with learning challenges; feminist rhetoric; Appalachian folk and hymn music, tall tales and making schools safe for sexual minority youth. Dr. Mahaffey works as a mentor for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) students and speaks widely on issues affecting LGBT students and teachers in inclusive classrooms. She is the proud mother of an amazing, talented and hilarious 18-year-old son, Ed, who is a musician, skateboarder, artist, writer, and freshman at Bowling Green State University, and of a handsome three year old Cocker Spaniel named, after a 1970’s punk rocker, Darby Crash.  In her “spare” time, Dr. Mahaffey reads incessantly, watches CSI and Lakers Basketball, goes dancing , and plays guitar and djembe.

 

ENG 111R (3): Introductory Writing-Dr. Cynthia Mahaffey-University Writing required based on placement test.

First year composition courses are an integral part of the Chapman at Kohl curriculum and special Chapman sections of composition marked “R” are recommended.  Composition course provide part of the foundation, in both communication skills and content, of a liberal education.  Realizing this, Chapman has recruited some of the most effective composition faculty to join the Chapman Community at Kohl.  They offer special Chapman-only sections: ENG 111R: ENG 112R: Varieties of writing (3) in spring.

ENG 111R is a three-hour course designed to give students instruction and practice in writing expository essays which are structured around the principles of academic argumentation.  In English 111R, students will receive instructions and help in organization and developing ideas, and will be given continued practice in sentence structures and mechanics.  Students will learn to write essays that essays that argue a position, essays that persuade, and essays that evaluate a piece of writing.
