Sherona Garrett-Ruffin , Ph.D.—Assistant Director of the Chapman Community and Instructor of PSYC 101R: General Psychology.

Sherona Garrett-Ruffin received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in biopsychology from Oberlin College and her Ph.D. in neuroscience from Kent State University . She has a number of interests in the field of psychology, and her interests continue to grow. She has conducted research on the effects of commonly used drugs on aggressive and risk-taking behaviors, as well as on the psychosocial development of first-year students.

Recently, her interests include financial education. She has taught general psychology, human anatomy and physiology, physiological psychology, and university orientation courses. She is also interested in the political aspects of education and once served as a school board member for the Cleveland Municipal School District in Cleveland , OH . Her passion for learning communities led her to establish the first Science Learning Community at Kent State University . When she is not in the classroom or in her office talking with students, Sherona assists her husband, Myron, in their marketing and promotions company, enjoys arts and crafts, and plays with her wonderful daughter.

Project: Educational and Mental Health Needs and Resources of Wood County, Ohio

First and second year Chapman students will engage in a community assessment project to learn about the mental health, educational needs and resources of the youth and elderly members of the Wood County community. To the degree possible, students will engage in the following activities: volunteering, interacting with program participants, strategic planners, program staff, administrators, teachers, parents, and other community members through focus groups and other outreach activities.  The hope is that as students you can help identify and design innovative and exciting ways to serve the community, while learning about the socioeconomic, psychological, and cultural factors that influence the mental health, educational needs and resources of the Wood County community.
