2012 Homecoming Lecture: When It's Not Black and White: Decision Making with Individuals with Dementia and Their Families

Friday, September 28, 2012
Bowen-Thompson Student Union
8:30 a.m.- noon
Description:  This workshop examined issues that families and professionals struggle with in making decisions related to driving, handling finances, and living situations for their relatives or clients who have memory loss or other cognitive changes.  Every person and situation is different and no clear legal guidelines exist to help with these decisions.  Ethical issues and risk assessment were described and practical strategies were presented and discussed.

Presenter:  Beth Spencer, MA, LMSW, has specialized in dementia care since 1982. She has worked with individuals with memory loss and their families in a variety of settings, including residential care, private practice and adult day programs.  Beth is co-author of Understanding Difficult Behaviors, Moving a Relative with Memory Loss: A Family Caregiver's Guide, and most recently, Developing Meaningful Connections with People with Dementia - a training manual published by the State of Michigan. Ms. Spencer retired in July 2012 from the Turner Geriatric Clinic and Cognitive Disorders Clinic, part of the Geriatric Center at the University of Michigan.
