NOTE: The following submission guidelines provide information about submitting manuscripts to Computers and Composition Online. Computers and Composition: An International Journal (the print journal) has separate submission guidelines. For more information, visit Computers and Composition: An International Journal

Submissions should be directed to the following sections:

  • Theory into Practice: Longer, research-based pieces blending rhetorical and critical theory with technological practice, acknowledging pedagogical or discursive implications.
  • The Virtual Classroom: Pedagogy and classroom experience, which may include syllawebs, resource sites, and student projects.
  • Professional Development: Our past, present and future. This will include interviews and profiles of C&C specialists, as well as conference updates and calls for submissions.
  • Print to Screen: Online features that connect with current print journal themes and special issues.
  • Reviews: Not only books, but sites, CD/DVDs, events, and other blended media. Please feel free to suggest items for review.

If you have work available, we encourage you to submit. Please note, however, that we accept emailed submissions only, and work that is intended for the web rather than the printed page is required. Each submission is screened by the in-house staff for appropriateness of content and format for the journal and then forwarded to two members of the editorial review board for an external peer review. This process takes approximately three weeks during the academic year. In some instances, a submission may be forwarded to a C&W specialist not on the board to ensure that the piece is reviewed by the most current subject experts. All pieces published at C&C Online have undergone a review and revision process, though reviews and professional development pieces are not sent out for external evaluation. APA format is required for bibliographic citation. If you have any questions about format or content, please feel free to contact us by email. All submissions and queries need to be emailed to either Kristine Blair (kblair@bgnet.bgsu.edu) or the appropriate section editor.

More Specific Guidelines for Web-Based Submissions:

Submissions for Computers and Composition Online need to be web-aware, meaning that they not only use the World Wide Web as a medium, they also take advantage of the benefits of this kind of publishing. Rhizomatic structures that disrupt traditional linear forms are welcome. Artful use of graphical interfaces and hypertext are also encouraged. Multimedia use, including digital video and audio, is also welcome. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • No purely text-based submissions such as Microsoft Word (.doc) or other word processing documents.
  • Software designed for creating websites such as Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe GoLive, or Microsoft FrontPage work best.
  • Care should be taken to ensure that images load in a reasonable amount of time. Also, images need to be either original work, used with permission, or fall under fair use guidelines.
  • CCO uses a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License in support of the open source in academia movement.
