Audacity is a free, open-source program that allows users to edit and record sound. The simplicity of this description demonstrates the power of Audacity: it can almost do it all, including record, edit, distort, cut, paste, assemble, capture, and create sound files. The program is available for most operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS X, and several GNU/Linux varieties. As podcasting and sound composition become more and more popular in composition courses, Audacity’s easy access and user-friendliness continue to make it the leader in creating audio compositions.

Audacity is often considered more powerful than other, more expensive sound composition programs such as Apple’s GarageBand.
