A Message from the Dean
Welcome to the 2014-2015 academic year! It is exciting to embark on another year in the College of Business. We will be celebrating a milestone in 2015, 80 years since the College of Business was established by the Ohio Legislature. Over the decades, our College has been nationally recognized for a tradition of excellence and this year we will continue to focus on programs and events that provide our students, faculty, staff, and alumni with the best opportunities for success… Going Beyond Business as Usual.
Over the weekend, we welcomed our incoming freshmen - the Class of 2018 – students who have chosen BGSU for its unique business program that provides more than a typical college education. The academic profile of our incoming students continues to increase. This year, our incoming freshman class includes 13% out-of-state students coming from such states as California, Colorado, Virginia, Vermont, and New York. Two percent of the freshmen are coming from overseas to seek a four-year college degree.
The Freshmen Opening Day festivities included a welcome from me, their “first lecture” from Dr. Gene Poor, the Hamilton Professor of Entrepreneurship, and a class photo, and during the games on the lawn they watched me fulfill an “ALS ice bucket challenge.” (Read more...) They also received special mentoring over the summer from a new College initiative – the Peer Leaders Program. Thirty sophomore business students served as mentors and role models. The Peer Leaders contacted the freshmen over the summer to transition them to college and the College of Business and will maintain contact throughout their first year here.
The College is pleased to announce the new Associate Dean, Dr. Zubair Mohamed, a tenured full professor in the management department. Dr. Mohamed, a University Distinguished Professor, comes to us with an extensive background in developing academic programs through leadership positions at Western Kentucky University. (Read more….) Joining the management department are two instructors - Dr. Edith Busija, PhD, management, University of Memphis, and Christopher Harben, Doctorate of Strategic Leadership, Regent University. Also new to the College in our Graduate and Executive Programs in Business office is Jen Moore who is the new administrative assistant.
In addition, we welcomed new members to the College of Business Board of Advocates and Young Alumni Board who will serve in advisory capacities to drive the College forward to achieve our goals. (Read more…)
We said goodbye to retiring faculty and administrative staff. They include Dr. Sue Mota, Dr. Dan Bragg, and Associate Dean Dr. John Hoag. The BGSU Board of Trustees conferred one of the highest designations to the two faculty members - Dr. Mota who was designated Emeritus Distinguished Teaching Professor of Economics and Legal Studies and Dr. Bragg was named Emeritus Associate Professor of Management. Dr. Hoag already had received Emeritus honors when he retired from teaching in 2011.
The College also honored outstanding faculty and staff during the opening day awards luncheon. Read about who this year’s award winners are. (Read more...)
We continue to offer student initiatives that differentiate our business program from others. Students will receive enhancements to their degree planning and help stay on track to graduate on time through a College of Business initiative - the Digital Degree Plan. This planning software tool has valuable benefits to students mapping out their class schedules during their college careers. It also provides an efficient resource planning tool for the College. We continue to be recognized for program excellence. Bloomberg Businessweek ranks our accounting program as #1 in Ohio and our entrepreneurial program as #51 in the U.S. In addition, the Dallas-Hamilton Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership will take center stage at the world’s largest annual gathering of university-based entrepreneurship centers, the Global Consortium for Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC) to be held in London in October. Kirk Kern, director of the Dallas-Hamilton Center, and Dr. Gene Poor, Hamilton Professor of Entrepreneurship, had their presentation selected for this prestigious opportunity and they will present at the conference. Student success stories continued over the summer. Supply chain student and member of the Falcon golf team, Jose Narro, was a top qualifier at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas which allowed him to compete for one of the last four spots at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship in Atlanta, Georgia; however, Narro was unsuccessful in making the final cut. Also, Master of Accountancy student Jessica Glenn was awarded the prestigious 2014-15 AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students – the Stuart Kessler Award presented by the American Institute of CPAs. Only one student is selected for this scholarship who demonstrates exceptional academic aptitude, a high level of service and volunteerism, and a commitment to becoming a leader in the CPA profession.
