BGSU Sales Competition

The BGSU Sales Competition showcases our best and brightest students pursuing a career in professional selling. BGSU undergraduate students from all majors are eligible to apply. Scholarship prizes are awarded and a top finish will impress potential employers on the student’s résumé.

Of those who apply, the 10-12 students who are the most accomplished in sales-related coursework, internships, and co-curricular activities are selected to compete.

The students perform a 15-minute role play, which is recorded in the College of Business recording lab and the videos judged by a panel of sales executives from our corporate sponsors. The top three students are announced and awarded prizes at the Marketing Department Sales Awards Banquet, attended by competition sponsors, all competing students, BGSU business faculty, and other sales-oriented students. Prize awards are as follows:

  • 1st Place: $1,000 scholarship
  • 2nd Place: $ 500 scholarship
  • 3rd Place: $ 250 scholarship

The top two BGSU students advance to the National Collegiate Sales Competition in Atlanta — a tremendous networking opportunity. The third place finisher may prepare as an alternate.

Ms. Christine Seiler, BGSU Sales Team Coach, helps the students prepare for national and regional competitions.

Participants/Eligibility: The competition is open to all BGSU undergraduate students – students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Application is free and very simple. Approximately ten of the most qualified students will be selected to compete.

Qualifications will be assessed by marketing faculty, based on the following (in no particular order): student’s focus on pursuing a sales career, application essay, extra-curricular activities (e.g., leadership in student organizations); past sales-related jobs or internships; whether or not students have taken MKT 4400; and academic performance in MKT 4400 and overall.

Competition: Students will be recorded performing a 15 minute role play involving the selling of a product/service to someone posing as a business buyer. Product information and a buyer profile to be determined by the Premier Sponsor.

Judging: Each student will be evaluated by at least four judges who will be provided with students’ recorded sales calls. Salespeople and sales managers from sponsoring companies will conduct the evaluations, which will be based on students’ performance on various steps and aspects of the selling process (i.e., approach, needs identification, presentation, overcoming objections, closing, etc.). A participant evaluation sheet will be provided to the judges (and to students ahead of time).

Awards: Winners will be announced at the Marketing Department Sales Awards Banquet on Wednesday, November 12, Bowen-Thompson Student Union, Lenhart Ballroom.

Cash prizes of $1000, $500 & $250 will be given to the top three finishers at BGSU!

The first and second place students advance to the National Collegiate Sales Competition, to be held at Kennesaw State University (near Atlanta, GA) on April 9-12, 2015.
