A MESSAGE FROM DEAN BRAUN

Greetings from the College of Business!

We recently graduated nearly 250 business students who are already Going Beyond Business As Usual. More than 86 percent of students have jobs or are interviewing. The average salary of our graduates is $53,556, which is higher than the national average.

The fall class is shaping up to be the most academically successful class in our history. We expect high enrollment of new students and high retention from the freshmen to sophomore year.

We are gearing up for the fall Women in Leadership Conference, the Business Analytics Symposium as well as Homecoming and Family Weekend. Mark your calendars for the following dates:

Family Weekend - September 16-18
Homecoming - October 1
Business Analytics - October 7
Women in Leadership - October 21

We hope to see you at these events this fall, in the meantime, have a fun and relaxing summer. Biz News will return in August.

LOVE OF MUSIC and Entrepreneurship
Sophia Schmitz, a violin performance major and an entrepreneurship minor, kept busy during her time at BGSU. She opened her own music and ballet studio in Bowling Green, the Black Swamp Fine Arts School. Her Honors senior project, a fully staged ballet, was presented in April at the Bowling Green Middle School performing arts center. Plus, Schmitz also was one of the Hatchlings in April.

Anna Crabill, a student in the School of Media and Communication, never imagined that her experience would come from a college that she wasn’t enrolled in and a job she didn’t apply for. While Crabill’s specialization is in public relations, her minor in marketing has created new ways for her to “go beyond business as usual.”

Faculty Excellence Awards
The College of Business Leadership Council created Faculty Excellence Awards to recognize outstanding faculty accomplishments in teaching, engaging with industry to provide experiential learning, and using technology to improve learning outcomes. A committee within the Leadership Council selects the winners and the three faculty members are presented their awards at a special recognition dinner.

LEAVING A LEGACY to BGSU
Marjorie Williams learned at a young age that hard work and determination can lead to success. But she never thought it would allow her to leave a legacy at the College of Business Administration. Williams, who majored in supply chain and marketing with an entrepreneurship minor, grew up as an only child in the Detroit area. Both of her parents were police officers and instilled the importance of a strong work ethic.

Graduating seniors gathered for their Graduation Luncheon and Time Capsule Ceremony with one last opportunity to enjoy conversations with their classmates and faculty. The seniors chose to hear their “Last Lecture” from Mr. Mearl Sutton, lecturer in the marketing department.

BGSU Student Finishes 3rd in the World for Capsim Competition; BGSU Has Best Capsim Performance Compared to Any Other U.S. University
Making good decisions is important to the success of a company and the College of Business goes Beyond Business As Usual in preparing students for career readiness.

Career readiness is demonstrated through the impressive performance of our students in the Foundation Business Simulation, also known as Capsim. The program replicates a real-life business scenario through a simulation to better assess participants’ skills and abilities. It also allows students to practice specific skills and build the business intelligence that is behind today’s successful companies.

CSI Student Team Investigates Community Opinions for Real World Projects
When students come to BGSU for their business education, they obtain a learning experience that is beyond the traditional college classroom. Students have the opportunity for hands on, real world experiences. A team of marketing students was selected to work for CSI (College Student Insights) – an independent academic group study advised and supervised by Dr. Jeff Meyer, assistant professor of marketing with expertise in marketing research providing these students a unique learning experience.

Senior business student Marjorie Williams was inspired from speakers she heard, a student organization she belonged to, and an honors project she worked on that resulted in her collaborating with Dean Ray Braun to create the Dean’s Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion (DACODI) which met for the first time on April 28.

Three business seniors were honored as one of the Top 10 Outstanding Seniors at BGSU by the Student Alumni Connection. Lauren Diehl (left) is specializing in supply chain and international business, Ashley Hillis (center) is specializing in supply chain, and Marjorie Williams (right) is specializing in supply chain and marketing. Diehl and Williams were mentored by College of Business Dean Ray Braun, while Hillis was mentored by Lakeshia Dowlen, assistant dean of students.

Congratulations to the top 4 CBA Rewards Points earners: Joey Goldblum (far right) with 2,090 points, Khory Katz (far left) with 1,950 points, Erica Augustyniak (right of Dean Braun) with 1,915 points, and Thayer Daniels with 1,900 points. They earn dinner at the dean’s house.

BGSU continues to be one of the “Top Universities for Professional Sales Education” according to the Sales Education Foundation (SEF). SEF published its 2016 listings and recognizes the best universities for preparing students for successful careers in professional selling and helping to elevate the sales profession.

Student teams competed in the CBA Business Olympics through various games based on business themes. The winning team shown with Dean Ray Braun are (left to right): Hayley Loy, Tiana Williams, Rachel Vince, Kalyn Osborne, and Karlee Lennen. The team is from Delta Sigma Pi student organization.

Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Meyer, marketing, for receiving tenure and promotion to associate professor by the BGSU Board of Trustees.

The winning team of the Spring 2016 MKT 4050 Services Marketing Blueprint Competition included, front row left to right: Kelliann Dennison and Brian Butts, (back row) Josh Meyers, Mike Hetzel, and Denzel Wheaton. Corporate judges were Haley Szelkowski (Thomson Reuters), Cory Spino (Marathon Petroleum) and Michelle Kinney (Enterprise Holdings). Ms. Christine Seiler was the instructor for MKT 4050.

Marketing 2010 students participated in Speed Interviews, pitching their skills to 25 employers from 19 different companies. The top three winners were Aaron McVicker, Nolan Culver and Keon Rayford. The winning class was Mr. Mearl Sutton’s 12:30 p.m. class. Thanks to all of our employers for a great event!

MBA student, Jenny Joohyung Kim, and Dr. Amelia Carr, chair of the management department, presented their research at the Production and Operations Management Society international annual conference. Their research is on the "Opportunities and Challenges of Glass Recycling in a Closed Loop Supply Chain.” Collaborating with researchers from Brazil and Italy is the next step in this research project.
