Spring 2016

Chair's Message

Greetings from the Department of Marketing! As Ben Franklin said, "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing about." You will see headlines for some of our doings worth writing about in the Table of Contents, below. Our department houses not only Marketing and Sales & Service Marketing, but also Entrepreneurship, Business Communications, first year courses, and BizX Applied Business Experience. That means there is a lot going on, so we’ll focus on the highlights here.

Fabulous news -- we just learned that the BGSU student chapter of the American Marketing Association continues to perform at the top of their game. The team just returned from the American Marketing Association’s International Collegiate Conference where the chapter finished among the top 25 of chapters out of 350+ organizations in 2015. With this high level of performance, the BGAMA chapter remains among the top 5% of chapters in the world!

Some of our readers may recall that Bob Wu retired last year from his position as department chair. I stepped into the position last August, returning to the College from the Associate Vice Provost position I served in for three years. I aim for us to be a department where we support students, faculty, and staff in making the most of their talents, as reflected in the activities highlighted in this newsletter.

We would love to hear from you about anything – your doings, and any suggestions or questions you may have. Please let us know what you are up to! Email me at skleine@bgsu.edu or the department administrative assistant, Marsha Bostelman, at mbostel@bgsu.edu with your news and activities.

Thank you for your interest, and please read on.

All the best,

Susan Kleine

Students "Sell" Their Way to National Sales Competition; Ludwig Finishes Among Top 12
BGSU has a long tradition of excellence when competing against the best sales talent in the country at the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC). The top two winners of the 2014 BGSU Sales Competition, Andrew Ludwig and Amy Wolf, competed at Kennesaw State University in Georgia last April. In fact, Ludwig earned his way into the semifinal round and placed in the top 12 out of 147 students who competed for the national title.

Ludwig describes his experience. "Competing at the National Collegiate Sales Competition was an amazing experience. It was incredible to compete in the semifinals with the top 16 sales students in the country. I was impressed by the level of talent from all competitors."

2015 BGSU Sales Competition Winners will Advance to Nationals in April
The BGSU Sales Competition continues to be highly competitive. In November, the winners for 2015-16 were announced at the Sales Award Banquet. The winner was Phil Rich, with Jessica Miller capturing second place. These students advance to the National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSC). Tiana Williams finished in third place and will serve as an alternate for NCSC.

Rich and Miller are now busy preparing for the national competition in April and they hope to match or exceed Andrew Ludwig’s high finish last year. Dr. Greg Rich is the team’s sales coach and the presenting sponsor for the BGSU sales competition's is Marathon Petroleum Company.

Earlier in the fall, Miller also placed 3rd out of 66 competitors at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire "Great Northwoods Warm-up" sales competition.

The Department of Marketing honored its top graduating senior in two specializations – marketing and sales and services marketing. The criteria to be selected by the faculty included overall GPA, involvement in student organizations as well as internship experience. The two winners were Kelsey Music (left) in marketing and Jane Swartz (right) in sales and services marketing. Dr. Bob Wu, retired chair, presented their awards at a reception last spring.

Entrepreneurship Program Teams up with Arts and Music to Offer Courses
Marketing department faculty members, Dr. Gene Poor, the Hamilton Endowed Professor in Entrepreneurial Leadership, and Mr. Kirk D. Kern, director of the Dallas-Hamilton Center, collaborated with BGSU’s School of Art and the College of Musical Arts to develop courses to teach students how to leverage their careers in an entrepreneurship venture. Both professors team taught the Art of Entrepreneurship course in the spring of 2015 where they introduced thirty students to the planning, execution and maintenance of arts and arts-related ventures.

The duo again were co-teachers in the Inaugural Entrepreneurship in Music course in the fall for composers, musicians and music educators so students could learn about business enterprise and innovation, as well as organization, including managing, marketing, finance and sales.

New Minor in Advertising Collaborates with School of Communication

The School of Media and Communication partnered with the Department of Marketing to offer a new advertising minor. According to Assistant Professor Doug Ewing who served on the committee to develop the minor, students can develop interdisciplinary knowledge in advertising including the functional areas of creative, production, media buying, strategy, and management.

It is a unique program that allows students differing paths based on their field of study. For instance, a business student with a marketing specialization completes the advertising minor by completing a sequence of courses in the School of Media and Communication. A telecommunications student pursuing an advertising minor draws from a set of courses offered by the Department of Marketing.

Alumni

Alumni Return to Campus to Enjoy Networking for Marketing Alumni Days
With an opportunity to speak in classrooms and network with current students, faculty, and fellow alumni, graduates from the marketing program come back to BGSU each year for Marketing Alumni Days. Alumni serve on panels and reminisce about their classroom days and offer valuable career insight for students. They describe the skills and experience students need to succeed.

Alumni enjoyed dinner at the Mileti Alumni Center while hearing from University and College administrators as well as students from the American Marketing Association.

Two Alums Share Marketing Expertise with MBA Students
