Lexie Miller, senior supply chain management major, interned with Marathon Petroleum during the fall semester. Miller was selected to be the global procurement intern at the Detroit, Michigan refinery. During her internship, she was exposed to many different aspects of global procurement.

She was able to be a part-time buyer for five indirect goods including bearings, tubings, transmissions, containers and janitorial supplies. This gave her a great understanding of how purchasing affects the company. Miller’s main role as an intern was acting as the procurement expeditor for global procurement and for the engineering department.

“Marathon has given me so many opportunities to learn and grow as a person,” said Miller. “They allowed me to job shadow other departments and visit suppliers that I worked with.”

Visiting these companies helped Miller to create great supplier relationships and a better understanding of how they meet Marathon’s needs. Communicating with suppliers also improved her professional speaking skills and mannerisms. “Marathon teaches their interns more than just their job requirements,” admitted Miller. “They teach interns about the oil industry, safety and the importance of community involvement. When I return to class, I know my internship experiences will help me learn and better grasp the concepts in my schoolwork.”
