Coverdell Fellows Program

Graduate Certificate in Ethnic Studies for Coverdell Fellows

Paul D. Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program

The Paul D. Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program (USA) is a graduate fellowship program that offers financial assistance to returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who wish to earn a Masters degree in one of the five Coverdell Programs at BGSU— American Studies, Business, Food and Nutrition, Master of arts in cross-cultural and international education, Public Administration, or Spanish.

Additionally, Coverdell Fellows who have been admitted to one of the Coverdell programs at BGSU may also acquire a graduate certificate in Ethnic Studies.

The department’s program is embedded in the activism of the Civil Rights Movement. Courses offered explores the ways in which racial and ethnic identities, social relations, racial and cultural aesthetics, and geographical spaces have been shaped over time. Focusing variously on the institutions and political/economic/social processes that have staged race at the center of the nation’s histories, Ethnic Studies at BGSU provides an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the significance of race in contemporary US society. We emphasize an ethically and socially responsible scholarship that engages you in thinking critically about the world you live in and your place in it.

A graduate certificate in Ethnic Studies therefore will strengthen your credentials in race and ethnic studies in national and global contexts and demonstrate your training in issues relating to diversity, globalization, migration, social and economic inequities, and contemporary realities.

Application Procedure for enrolled students at BGSU:

In addition to the application required by the Graduate College, Fellows who are enrolled in a BGSU Coverdell program should  submit a personal statement (2 pages maximum) of career goals and reasons for applying to the ES certificate program to the Ethnic Studies graduate coordinator.
