AIMS Mission

The Purpose of the Academic Investment in Math and Science (AIMS) program is to increase the number of women and students of color who graduate from BGSU with majors in mathematics, computer and natural sciences, and who proceed to get terminal degrees in their fields then ultimately perform cutting-edge research and/or teaching.”
The goals within the overall mission:

  1. Develop a pipeline of high school students who matriculate at BGSU and pursue careers in math, computer and natural science
  2. Increase the number of well-prepared underrepresented minority and women graduates who major in mathematics, computer science, or the natural sciences
  3. Increase the number of underrepresented minority and women graduates who attend graduate school and obtain terminal degrees in their areas of interest

Components of the Plan:

  1. 5-week Summer Accelerated Program
  2. AIMS Seminar I and II with the primary purpose being to provide students with a better sense of belonging to BGSU and AIMS.
  3. On-going mentorship program
  4. Regular/Individual, one-on-one meetings with the AIMS Director
  5. Students Teaching and Reaching Students (STARS) give students the forum to:
    1. Teach and learn from each other
    2. Receive expertise on math/science topics
    3. Receive frequent and continued positive reinforcement for course material
  6. Research opportunities after the freshmen year, including summer REU
  7. Summer internships
  8. Participation in campus research seminars, poster sessions and/or presentations
  9. Off-site visits to conferences where at which AIMS scholars may be presenters
  10. Volunteerism and promotion of AIMS program
  11. Mentoring of incoming AIMS scholars
  12. Academic counseling & Tutoring
  13. GRE/MCAT exam preparation, starting the sophomore year
  14. Exposure to ‘real world’, accomplished mathematicians and scientists
  15. Visits to graduate school programs
  16. Assistance in securing admission to and financial assistance in graduate programs
