Science & Math Education in ACTION

Summer Bridge Student Comments

This is what current students are saying about the ACTION Summer Bridge program:

At first I was upset that I was missing an entire month of my senior summer. But the Summer Bridge Program ended up being the highlight of my summer! I made so many new friends, great faculty, and had so much fun! I really liked having a month to become acquainted with college life. During the Summer Bridge Program I was able to meet a ton of professors at BGSU. Many of those same professors, I will actually have for a class. It was nice to get to know them and see the person behind the professor. Also, the ACTION staff members are a huge help in almost every aspect, from housing to scheduling. It is a great program!

The Summer Bridge program was great! Some might look at the ACTION Program and just ignore it because they have to be at BGSU in the summer. Well honestly, it doesn’t even feel like school. It is fun school! It is very laid back but it also prepares you for the college in the fall. The Summer Bridge program also helped me get familiar with campus so I didn’t feel lost on move-in day. Also, the Summer Bridge program gave me the opportunity to meet a lot of different professors and I was able to make 26 new friends! It was nice coming to BGSU in the fall and already knowing half the people on my floor. After the Summer Bridge program I felt more prepared and ready for the upcoming year and I was ready to take on any challenge.

I went into the Summer Bridge thinking that I would be spending the entire month with a bunch of math and science nerds. I couldn't have been more wrong. During the Summer Bridge I learned a lot about math and science, had a blast while doing it, and made some awesome friends! I met one of my best friends in the ACTION Program!

ACTION is fantastic! Not only did it give me a bunch of friends I knew in the first week of college, but I had a BLAST at the summer program and was already comfortable living on campus as a freshman. In addition, my practicum experience gave me a chance to learn more about how I can apply science to my students and the capstone research project will enable me to work with something that I feel is important to myself as a professional science teacher.

The summer bridge program is an extremely beneficial aspect of the ACTION program that helps first year students become acquainted to the college life before the fall. During the summer there are many interactive and exciting sessions that incorporate mathematics and science in a new way. Also, it is nice to build friendships during the summer and know that you already have a group of friends to come back to in the fall. Being able to live on the same floor in a residence hall is great because the floor has a unity not commonly found on other floors. Overall, the summer bridge program is a great way to become accustomed to the transition to Bowling Green State University, and I honestly would not know what I would have done without it.

Summer Bridge was initially what lured me to the ACTION program, and I wasn't disappointed!  My participation in Summer Bridge allowed me to build my closest circle of friends here at BG, get acquainted with some parts of campus, and have all my personal belongings moved into my residence hall before the hectic freshman move-in day!

My research group was fantastic, I really built a close relationship with the professor that was conducting the research and I built positive relationships with students that are in many of my content classes. Talk about study buddies!

The ACTION Program will strengthen my resume as I begin applying for competitive jobs once I near graduation in several years. I am now only a sophomore and I have completed a year-long research project and am almost done completing a practicum experience at a local company. ACTION has enabled me to be involved in these things and I am extremely grateful not only for the scholarship, but for the experience.

                                                                    - Melissa, Sophomore Middle Childhood Education Major

The summer bridge program was a unique, incredible experience that I will never forget.  The program not only introduced me to BGSU, but also provided the ability to make outstanding relationships with a group of friends and faculty that will last forever.  The bridge program, in essence, introduced me to my second family.

                                                                    - Casey, Sophomore, AYA Math Education Major

The Summer Bridge program helped me connect with close classmates and get excited about math and science before school even started.  It is a great experience to get familiar with campus, learn about professors that will teach future classes, and meet friends that will last a lifetime. The ACTION Program benefited me greatly in the aspect of advising and faculty involvement.  As a first year student, I had no idea what classes I needed to take, or how to schedule the classes I needed, but time and time again, the faculty from ACTION sat down with me to make sure I was on the right track, and even helped me come up with a plan to graduate a year early! The faculty members are also very involved in other classes and campus organizations, and it is a great connection for those looking to get involved. Throughout the Summer Bridge, we met several professors that I have had in classes, and they remembered me as an ACTION Student and I was able to feel more confident when asking for help because of the connections made.

The ACTION Practicum allowed me to gain insight into how my studies could be applied to something beyond the classroom. I was able to do chemistry outside of a laboratory, in a real world setting where living organisms were depending on my calculations to stay alive!  The experience overall was helpful in making sure I give similar experiences to my future students.

                                                                    - Kim, Junior, AYA Life Science/Chemistry Major

At first I was discouraged to be giving up my entire July after my senior year in high school to attend the ACTION Summer Bridge. But then, I realized I had the whole month of June for fun in the sun and that this was an amazing chance to get a head start on college. Afterward, in the fall, when other freshmen were walking around campus looking like fools with maps, we ACTION students already knew a lot about being a successful college student! Another thing that convinced me to apply was all the opportunities I would receive. A year-long research project, a practicum experience, and a pedagogical research project are just some of the experiences. Even thought it was hard to think about these things as a high school graduate, I NEEDED to start thinking about it. When it comes down to it, the more experience I have, the greater chance I will get my dream teaching job. I simply couldn’t pass up the opportunities that ACTION provides. Plus, the friends I made during the Summer Bridge Program have helped me survive college. The opportunity to make friends and know people going into the first semester is a priceless advantage that not everyone gets. Of course, the scholarship money is a huge benefit. When I’m sitting pretty with a job in a few years, I guarantee I will be even more grateful for the ACTION Program. I encourage anyone thinking about being a science or math teacher to consider applying to join our amazing and growing ACTION family!
